Last Day for Term 1 |
Free Dress Day
Each term we have a fundraiser, usually a free dress day, where we raise money for a particular purpose. For two of the four terms we raise funds to support outside school agencies and two terms we raise funds for school purchase items. Some of the things we have purchased in recent times include the lectern in the hall which is used during parade each week and our school map near the administration building.
To start our fund raising this year, we’d like to support Bully, No Way Day on 19th March. Funds raised will be used to purchase equipment which can be used at playtimes.
Please support this worthy cause by coming in free dress, ensuring you are wearing something orange, on Friday 19th March and making a gold coin donation. Please remember to wear your school hat and school shoes so you can safely participate in the school activities. Let’s remember to be sun safe too by ensuring our shirts / dresses have short sleeves to cover our shoulders.
Thanks in advance for your support with this fundraising activity.
Student Code Of Conduct - Individual Circumstances
Staff at Kurwongbah State School take into account students’ individual circumstances, such as their behaviour history, disability, mental health and wellbeing, religious and cultural considerations, home environment and care arrangements when teaching expectations, responding to inappropriate behaviour or applying a disciplinary consequence.
In considering the individual circumstances of each student, we recognise that the way we teach, the support we provide and the way we respond to students will differ. This reflects the principle of equality, where every student is given the support they need to be successful. This also means that not everyone will be treated the same, because treating everyone the same is not fair. For example, some students need additional support to interpret or understand an expectation. Others may benefit from more opportunities to practise a required skill or behaviour. For a small number of students, the use of certain disciplinary consequences may be considered inappropriate or ineffective due to complex trauma or family circumstances. These are all matters that our teachers and principal consider with each individual student in both the instruction of behaviour and the response to behaviour.
Our teachers are also obliged by law to respect and protect the privacy of individual students, so while we understand the interest of other students, staff and parents to know what punishment another student might have received, we will not disclose or discuss this information with anyone but the student’s family. This applies even if the behavioural incident, such as bullying, involves your child. You can be assured that school staff take all matters, such as bullying, very seriously and will address them appropriately. We expect parents and students will respect the privacy of other students and families.
If you have concerns about the behaviour of another student at the school, or the way our staff have responded to their behaviour, please make an appointment to discuss the matter.

National Young Leaders’ Day
Young Leaders’ Day was awesome! The year 6 Student Leaders’ Council went as well as the music captains and sports captains. There were lots of presentations by famous Australians. These included Darius Boyd, a football superstar, the Governor-General of Australia “His Excellency” the Honorable David Hurley, and Lachie Smart, who is the youngest person to circumnavigate the world as a solo pilot. Anastasia Woolmer, the two-time Australian memory champion, and Josh Pyke, an author and singer also spoke. Young Leader’s Day was held at the Brisbane Convention Centre. All of the speakers have had to go through hard challenges and one of the major messages was to never give up. We really enjoyed the day and I’m sure all of us who went would love to go again.

Resolving Issues Respectfully At School - Respect Our Staff , Respect Our School - Information For Parents And Families
A key priority of state school staff, parents and families is to foster a safe and healthy learning environment for all Queensland students. As a parent of a school-aged child, there may be times when issues arise that affect your child, for example a playground incident with another child or issues within the classroom. How those issues are handled can make a significant difference to the learning and development of our students, and the positive environments we aim to create and nurture. The following information can assist parents, families and school staff to manage issues respectfully and reach an outcome that is in the best interest of the student.
Talk To Your Child's Teacher
If you are concerned about your child’s academic progress or school work, the teacher may be able to suggest ways to help your child at home or help you to access additional support at school. If your child is experiencing persistent social issues, make an appointment with your child’s teacher as soon as possible. Together, you and your child’s teacher should be able to resolve the issue calmly and respectfully.
Talk To Your School Office Administration Staff About General School Issues
If you have a general issue — for example, having difficulty paying school fees or are seeking information about excursions, camps, or general issues — you can get in touch with the school office administration staff to calmly discuss the issue and find a workable solution.
Talk To Your School Principal Or Leadership Team If The Issue Remains Unresolved
If you have approached your child’s teacher or school office staff and your issue remains unresolved, make an appointment to see the school principal or deputy principals to discuss the issue further.
Useful Tips For Resolving Issues Related To School
- Remain calm and be respectful towards school staff when raising an issue with them.
- Try to keep an open mind and accept that there may be multiple views and multiple different perspectives.
- Remember schools are busy and complex places, and sometimes it may take time to resolve certain issues.
- Have a clear idea of the outcome you are seeking and communicate this desired result.
- If an agreed solution isn’t working, discuss other options with school staff

Basketball
Congratulations to Isaiah for being selected in the Pine Rivers Basketball team. He will trial at Met North level in mid-March. We wish him all the best at this next level of the sport.
Swimming
We had 13 swimmers participate in the Pine Rivers Swimming Trials 17th February : Hope, Breea, Aaliyah, Layla, Dekoda, Sierran, Hayden T, Ethan, Archie, Bridget, Evie and Isaiah. Many of these students were new to representative school sport. They showed some really impressive performances in their events and great support for other swimmers (often some of the loudest cheerers in the stadium). Hope, Aaliyah and Saffron attended the Met North swimming trials 24th February. We await all results to come through to determine whether they were selected in the Met North Team.
Gala Day
Teams have been finalised and nominated for Gala Day 26th March. Training sessions for the different sports are almost finalised. Details below:
- Rugby League – After school training Thursday 4/11/18 March 3.15 – 4.15pm. All students need a mouthguard to attend any training session. Students will also need to change out of their uniforms into more suitable training attire. Meet Mr. Crowe and Mr. Wood at Values Green at 3.15pm.
- Soccer – Thursday mornings 4/11/18/25 March 8.00 – 8.45am. All students in Year 4-6 participating in Gala Day are encouraged to attend these sessions. Meet Mr. Wood on the oval at 8.00am.
- Netball – Wednesday morning 10/17/24 March 8.00 – 8.40am. Some additional sessions will be scheduled once specific teams have been selected (we have 105 netball players). Students are to meet Mrs. Lane, Miss Niesler and Mr. Brown at the Multipurpose courts at 8.00am.
- Cricket – Details yet to be finalised.
District Rugby League Trials
These trials are scheduled for 17th March under 2 categories 10-11 and 11-12 years. Students need to be experienced and have played at a club level to be considered. Schools can only nominate up to 3 students so there may need to be a selection trial at school level. Any interested students are to see Mr. Wood by Friday 5th March.

Every time you place a Scholastic order, your School is being rewarded! For example, for every Book Club order you place, Scholastic receives 20% of your total order spend to your school as Scholastic Rewards. This allows the school to purchase books and resources for your child’s classroom and the library, helping students reach their highest potential.
How To Order
The Book Club LOOP platform for parents allows you to pay by credit card. Loop orders are due by Thursday 18th March. Your child’s order is submitted directly to school and the books will be delivered to your child’s class. You can place your child’s order at http://scholastic.com.au/LOOP or using the LOOP app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
Cash orders can be handed into the library by Thursday 18th March also. Simply fill out the order form on the back of the catalogue, place the form and the exact cash amount into an envelope or clip seal bag and drop off to the LIBRARY ONLY!

P&C News
P&C AGM
The P&C AGM is set to be held on Wednesday March 10th at 6:30pm. At this meeting, all positions on the P&C Executive Team, Fundraising Sub Committee and Building Fund Sub Committee are elected. As some parents in these positions have now graduated from Kurwongbah, we are looking for some new parents with fresh ideas to join the team.
Our greatest role of importance to fill is the P&C Treasurer. If you have accounting or bookkeeping skills, approximately 2 hours per week available, and want to engage with your child’s school, then please make contact with the P&C President Mel Crowhurst to discuss the role – president@ksspca.qld.edu.au This role is supported by the P&C Admin Officer, and is critical to having a functioning P&C.

Skate Night
Thank you to all the families who joined us for Skate Night on Wednesday and Thursday last week. We had 126 skaters at Junior Skate Night, and 145 at Senior Skate Night. It was nice to see so many families skating together, older siblings helping their younger siblings around the rink, and parents catching up.
We had a traditional ‘Guess the Lollies in the Jar’ competition running each evening, and our lucky winners were Michelle on Junior Skate Night, and Peppa on Senior Skate Night. Both young ladies guessed the exact number of lollies in the jar.
