Voluntary Contribution

Voluntary Contribution is a vital part of the Kurwongbah P&C’s commitment and helps to fund reading books, maths & science consumables, art consumables, digital resources, sporting equipment and positive behaviour learning program resources.

You can make a financial contribution to the school by completing the attached form and forwarding with payment to the school office. The contribution equates to $1 per week for the 40 weeks of the school year. If parents would like to pay a larger or smaller contribution towards their child’s education they are welcome to do so.

Absences

Absence notification process

Please advise of your child’s absence early in the morning before 9:30am, so that it can be recorded prior to the SMS absence message being remitted.

When reporting absences, please use our SMS service (preferably) on 0429 919 560. Your other means of letting us know is via our absence line (3481 4366), by QParents or by the main phone line. Please be sure you indicate the following when reporting the absence:

  • Name of child (especially if there is more than one child in your family)
  • Absence reason – Please indicate if your child is sick or at an appointment etc. Indicating that your child is not coming to school, does not give a true reason for the absence.
NOTE – there is a limit of 100 characters. Please limit the amount of words.
  • Late Arrival – If your child will be late due to an appointment, please indicate an approximate time of arrival
  • Dates of absences, if longer than 1 day

When using our absence line (3481 4366), please speak very clearly.

Bell Times & Appointments

Parents are reminded of the bell times. If you are planning to collect your child during the break times, we MUST have prior knowledge, so we can have your child waiting at the office. We can’t otherwise guarantee to locate your child until they transition back to their classroom.

Student Safety Issues

The safety of students and staff is very important. Members of the school community are asked to observe the following:

  • Students are required to have their Kurwongbah school hats at school EVERY day and students must wear hats during both play breaks unless they are playing undercover.
  • Students who bring scooters to school must secure them in the bike area. Scooters are NOT to be stored in class areas.
  • Parents and carers are also asked to use the school crossings (Eacham Street and Eucumbene Drive) when bringing their children to and from school. This teaches our children the correct road safety rules. Thank you for your support with these safety precautions.
  • Parents and carers are permitted to photograph their own child at school events and activities but are requested to refrain from taking photos of other children or posting school material online (including facebook).

Contact Details

It is important that the school have the correct contact details. This is especially important in emergency situations or if your child presents as unwell during the school day. If you have changed your mobile phone number, address or email address, complete the attached form and forward to the office. Please be also aware if you have a change in emergency contacts.

Eco-Marines News

Congratulation goes to Reuben Mills, Rory Mitchell, Asha Felton and Chloe who were voted Eco-Marine ambassadors. A big congratulations also goes to the other nominees who spoke confidently in front of their Year 5 peers and I encourage them to join the Eco-Marines support crew. The four elected ambassadors can look forward to a training day at Tangalooma Island on the 5th May.

The Eco-Marines ambassadors will be responsible for educating students, staff and the wider school community on ways Kurwongbah State School can reduce the amount of waste produced and ending up in landfill.

I know the students are keen to get started and make a difference.

Chappy News

Greetings Kurwongbah families,

One of the things I love about being a Chaplain, is the opportunity I have to see students grow and develop throughout their educational journey. Working across all year levels gives me the chance to really see the changes that students go through as well as being able to support them as they navigate the various challenges of growing up.

One of the most common challenges I see students dealing with, regardless of what year level they may be in, is in the area of building solid friendships and developing healthy friendship skills. It is a rare week that goes by where I am not being called upon to help a young person work their way through a friendship challenge or talking with students about the negative sides of peer relationships, especially in the upper grades.

While there are plenty of tools and strategies we use and teach at school around good friendships, parents play a pivotal role in setting their child up for success in this area. As parents, we have a great opportunity to model and teach our young people not only how to be a great friend, but how to deal with friendship issues as they come up. Some of the ways we can do that include:

  1. Speak positively about your own friends. I love raving about my besties to my kids and they love them as a result. I often talk about the reasons I love the women I get to do life with and the qualities they bring to my life.
  2. Show them how to make new friends by making new friends yourself. Involve them in (age-appropriate) settings where you are out of your comfort zone and meeting new people – imagine, if it is hard for you, what it might be like for them! This can be a great learning experience for you both and helps develop empathetic understanding for what our young people face when encountering new schools, new year levels and so on.
  3. Allow your child the opportunity to make new friends. For example:
    - Encourage participation in extracurricular activities such as afternoon sport, library clubs, community and youth groups.
    - Gradually move the goalposts of their dependence on you.
  4. Role model how to repair after conflict. How you model conflict resolution can go a long way to helping your young person reflect the same skills.

Attached is a great resource to have on hand when thinking about what kind of friendship skills we can help our children develop. It is well worth having on hand and exploring these qualities with our children whenever a learning opportunity comes up.

Have a fantastic week!

Seniors (Yr 3-6)

Tuesday -Thursday: 2nd Break

Design Technology

Year 5 students are creating a service for an edible plant as part of their Design Technology unit and assessment. Students will need to bring in a container or repurpose an item that they would like to plant their plant into for the assessment. Items can be brought to the Makerspace for collection. Milk containers, tubs, tins and plastic bottles are just a few ideas for this project.

Premier’s 2022 Coding Challenge

The 2022 Premier’s Coding Challenge is on again! This challenge offers great prizes of coding and robotics kits and an excellent opportunity for students to create some interactive and innovative coding. The theme for 2022 is #digitalfuturesqld. Technologies is an ever-growing industry that will impact the future world of work.

Entrants from Year 3 -6 can develop an app, game, animation or website, and they must submit a short video showcase with their entry.

For more information see the teachers in the library or visit the link below for more details.

https://education.qld.gov.au/about-us/events-awards/awards-competitions/premiers-coding-challenge

Entry portal opens 1st April and close on the 17th September 2022.

Coding and Robotics

Junior students are enjoying using their coding and problem-solving skills to program the robotic mouse to reach the cheese. They set the course using the green square templates and use the robotic mouse to move along the path. Will your mouse reach the cheese? Come and join in the fun at the Makerspace and test your skills!

Lego Creations

Junior students are having great fun designing and creating with Lego constructing vehicles and other devices in the Makerspace. Students can enhance their design by adding motors and sensors using the We-Do 2 kits with block coding to make their device interactive.

Music News

Thank you to everyone who has returned the Student Resource Scheme (SRS) forms. Students who have not returned the forms have been sent a dojo message and hard copies have been sent home with your child. Please ensure the forms are returned promptly. In the coming week your child will receive a note (hard copy) regarding the cost involved in the Instrumental Music and/or Choral Program. This note will have your child’s name on it with details itemising the amounts payable for your child. An invoice will then be emailed with the total amount. Please keep an eye out for the note and email.

Performance Uniforms

Students in all instrumental ensembles and choirs will start to be fitted for a performance uniform from this week. This is a very lengthy process and it might take a few weeks before your child is fitted. Once all students have been fitted and payment has been finalised, your child will be able to take the uniform home (this will be towards the end of the term).

Rehearsals

Rehearsals are well under way and our pieces are starting to come together. Instrumental students should be undertaking individual practice at home to ensure they know their part for a productive rehearsal when they all come together. Practice makes progress!

Thank you to everyone for arriving on time for rehearsals and also for emailing (or dojo messaging) the teacher if your child can’t attend. Please check the start time below to ensure your child is on time for before school rehearsals.

Physical Education & Sports News

Met North Swimming Trials

Congratulations to Oliver, Estella, Hope and Saffron who represented Kurwongbah State School as part of the trials. All students performed strongly against some strong competition. Well done students on the many hours of training you have completed in the lead up to the event. Congratulations to Saffron who was selected as a Met North Team representative to attend the Queensland State Schools Swimming Championships at Chandler in Week 9. Saffron was selected to race in all of the events she entered and may also compete in an additional individual and relay event during these championships. Great work Saffron.

Sport Calendar Term 1

A series of school, district and regional sporting activities commence from this week. They are all included in the attached document. Some additional details are included below:

  • District and Regional Trials : All students obtain a trial form from Mr. Fowler. Some sports require trials at a school level to determine who attends.
  • Sporting Schools Football : This is for students in Year 1-2. An external coach will run these sessions. Mr. Waldron is the key contact for these activities and will be present at each session.
  • Cross Country Training commences this week also in the lead up to our school trials in Week 10. This is a good opportunity for our students aged 10-12 to build their fitness.

Interschool Sport

Year 5 and 6 students will participate in a modified format for sport this year. Instead of a Gala Day in Term 1 and 3 we will schedule 3 x part day events in Term 2 and another 3 x part day events in Term 3. Students have indicated their preferences for different sports and permission forms were issued last week and parents emailed invoices 23rd February. Training sessions for League Tag Boys will take place after school Tuesdays with Mr. Fowler and League Tag Girls after school Thursdays with Mr. Wood and a NRL coach. Training sessions for the other sports will be scheduled once we have a clearer indication of how many students will be participating.
