Bell Times
Parents are reminded of the bell times. If you are planning to collect your child during the break times, please ensure you contact the office to advise, so we can have your child waiting at the office. We can’t otherwise guarantee to locate your child until they transition back to their classroom.
Facilities Update
Work on GLA1 is almost completed with the installation of a new roof. It is anticipated that 2A and 2B will return to their classrooms this week.
Work continues on the Solar Schools Project with solar panels being installed on the Music building and Main Hall. This system will significantly offset electricity costs for the school.
Year 6 Group Photo
The Year 6 group photo has been rescheduled to Wednesday 18th May. Students should wear their Year 6 shirt (preferable) otherwise jade or check shirt is acceptable. No house shirts for the photo please.

Mother’s Day Craft Stall – Thank You
Thanks to our amazing members of our P & C Craft Group for their vast range of items that they had on sale last week at the Mother’s Day Craft Stall. Thank you to the hundreds of students who made purchases at the stall. We hope that ll the mums and carers felt very spoilt with the purchases that your child made. Special thanks to Mrs Greer and the large number of parent helpers who assisted at the stall to assist students with their purchases.
Prep – Mother’s Day Celebrations
Last Friday, all our Prep mothers were invited to a special in class celebration, where they could participate in craft activities and be pampered.

Newsletter Permissions
Schoolzine is the school’s primary means of communicating to the school community in the form of the school newsletter, as well as year level, class level and whole school level messages.
Parents only receive this communication if they have provided “Schoolzine” permission for their child which is generally authorised at enrolment. Forms were recently distributed to all students who are currently without permission, including those that expired at the end of Year 2 (permission is given for the period Prep-Year 2 and Year 3-Year 6).
If we do not receive this permission by the end of this term, you will no longer receive Schoolzine communications. Complete and return the permission form as soon as possible so this access can be continued. It is a requirement of the Department of Education to regularly review permissions for access to online services.
Covid Restrictions Update
As you may be aware, Queensland Health has updated the requirements for anyone who is deemed a close contact of a confirmed case of COVID-19. Please note, when determining whether someone is a close contact, schools and early childhood services are not considered a household, or household-like accommodation or care facility.
New Requirement for Close Contacts
From 6pm on Thursday 28 April 2022, close contacts that do not have COVID-19 symptoms are no longer required to quarantine.
Students who are close contacts must notify their school that they are a close contact. For 7 days after becoming a close contact, students over the age of 12 must wear a face mask while outside of their home, including at school, and when outdoors if unable to physically distance. Queensland Health also recommends that children under the age of 12 wear a face mask when it is safe to do so.
It is recommended that students undertake a rapid antigen test (RAT) on the first day they leave home, and every second day (e.g. days 2, 4, and 6) until they are no longer a close contact. Close contacts that develop COVID-19 symptoms must not attend school and should isolate until their symptoms resolve.
Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs)
Schools are not providing RATs to staff or students who are close contacts. You will need to source and administer your own tests. However, our school is continuing to provide RATs to staff and students who develop COVID-19 symptoms while at school.
If You or Your Child Tests Positive to COVID-19
Queensland Health requirements for people who test positive to COVID-19 remain unchanged. You must follow the Queensland Health guidelines outlined in the first steps to take if you have COVID-19.
Face Masks
As a gentle reminder, masks continue to be required in certain settings for anyone aged 12 years or older, such as when travelling on public transport. They are also recommended whenever you can't physically distance. Anyone who chooses to wear a mask at school will be supported to do so.
We will continue to keep you informed of any changes to our response to COVID-19.

Sponsors
Who can become a Kurwongbah Fete Sponsor?
Anyone who would like to assist us with either a product or cash donation is welcome to become a Fete Sponsor for 2022. Listed below are some of the stalls that need assistance and ideas of how you can help. If you own a business and can assist us or if you could approach your employer that would be wonderful. If you are a loyal and regular customer ask the owner – you never know until you ask.
Pick a Box
Past prizes have included: theme park vouchers, magazine subscriptions, fast food vouchers, jewellery, garden equipment, games, cameras. This is where small businesses can help, products or services from the following make great prizes: florists, fast food outlets, hairdressers, gift shops, nurseries, restaurants – the list is endless.
Sample Bags
This stall is aimed at the children and we would appreciate fun novelty items (stress bals, pencils, pens, rules, etc), hats, small toys, fast food vouchers, food samples (Nestles, Sakata etc). This is where the corporate world can help us out with their promotional items.

Kurwongbah Kids Playgroup
Guidance Officer (GO) Greetings
Greeting Kurwongbah Families!
Have you ever felt really angry about something? Of course you have, everyone has! Our children also get angry and sometimes need our help to manage their strong feelings. This week I am sharing some tips adapted from a ‘Kids Matter’ resource – I hope it is useful to you.
Helping Children Learn to Manage Anger
Parents and carers can help children learn how to cope with anger in positive ways by teaching them to be aware of feelings, to find appropriate ways to express them, and to identify and solve the problems or frustrations that lead to angry feelings.
Learning skills for understanding and dealing with anger will make it easier for children to solve problems, get help when needed and be more relaxed around others.
Be Aware Of Feelings
Children need to learn that having angry feelings is normal and okay, but that reacting aggressively towards others when you’re angry is not. Adults can help children become aware of feeling annoyed, frustrated, angry or furious by naming feelings. Learning to say, “I’m feeling angry” or “I’m really frustrated” gives children a way to separate feeling angry from how they react.
Time to Talk
Talking to your children about what has put them in an angry mood will help them see that feelings have causes and that solutions can be found. Once you find out what your child was angry about you can help him/her think up better ways to handle the problem. This kind of conversation doesn’t work while your child is still feeling angry – usually it must wait until later.
Children often find it easier to talk in informal situations where they feel less pressure. Find a relaxed time to talk to children about feelings. Asking, “What makes you angry?” can be a good way of starting a conversation about anger.
Find Alternatives
Getting children to think through a difficult situation helps them develop problem solving skills. Asking “Is that what you wanted to happen?” or “What else could you have tried?” encourages children’s helpful thinking. Thinking of alternative solutions helps children plan different ways of reacting next time. Be sure to praise their efforts.
Have Ways to Calm Down
When emotions are strong, it is easy to act without thinking. Encourage your child to take control and allow time for the emotions to subside. Walking away, using a quiet spot to think or doing something else like riding a bike or listening to music, are all activities that can assist in reducing strong emotions.
‘Cool Down’ Steps to Teach Children
1. Recognise that you are angry
- Notice the body signals that mean you’re angry, such as getting hot, heart racing, tense muscles etc.
- Give a number from 1 to 10 to show how angry you are.
2. Cool down your body
- Breathe slowly.
- Take time-out in a quiet place.
- Go for a walk, do something physical.
- Draw how you feel.
3. Use coping self-talk
- “It’s okay. I can handle this”.
4. Try to solve the problem
- Talk to someone who is a good listener.
Plan what to do next time.

Techgirls Competition
The 2022 Techgirls competiton is underway and students have been now assigned a mentor for their development of their entry. Sophie Krantz works as an ExO coach at ExO Works in Victoria and will work with the KSS Superheroes team. Clare Dlugosz is a group director of Technology and Transformation at MediaCom in Brisbane and will mentor the KSS Girls Tech team. These mentors engage with the two teams in a virtual meeting room using, ‘Blackboard,’ every fortnight to help the students produce a high-quality plan and a working app prototype as part of their entry for the competition.
Design Technology – Year 5 Reminder
Year 5 students are creating a service for an edible plant as part of their Design Technology unit and assessment. Students will need to bring in a container or repurpose an item that they would like to plant their plant into for the assessment. Items can be brought to the Makerspace for collection. Milk containers, tubs, tins and plastic bottles are just a few ideas for this project.
Coding and Robotics
Junior students are enjoying using their coding and problem-solving skills to program the robotic mouse to reach the cheese. They set the course using the green square templates and use the robotic mouse to move along the path. Will your mouse reach the cheese? Come and join in the fun at the Makerspace and test your skills!

Cross Country
Well done to all of our students who took part in our school cross country on the 27th April. This event was also used to help us determine the students who would represent our school at the district cross country. The age champions for each age group will be acknowledged on Parade on the 13th May.
Well done also to our students who competed in the district trials which were held Friday 6 May. Our team consisted of Zeke, Reuben, Oliver, Jake, Jasmine, Emerson, Vlad, Hayden, Sianna, Billie and Zachary. Our students ran well on a challenging, hot and muddy course. An extra special congratulation goes to Zachary and Jasmine who will move on to compete in the Met North Cross Country Trials in late May.
Interschool Sport
Our Year 5 and 6 students had their first Interschool Sport day on Friday 29th April. Our students were well prepared and enjoyed competing against teams from other local schools. Our next scheduled interschool sports dates are 20th May and 3rd June.
Athletics Training
The focus in PE lessons for most year levels switches now to Athletics events. To coincide with this we will commence some training sessions at lunch time (junior/ middle levels) and after school (senior levels). Our students turning 10, 11 or 12 in 2022 should attend the after school sessions. If your child is interested in attending any of the after school sessions then please ask them to collect a form from Mr. Wood. The form helps to determine the number of students who will attend. Please note that the first training session is the same day as Interschool Sport Day #2 (hoping the bus returns all students promptly this time around).
