School Council News
The School Council thanks outgoing members Mrs Judith Dunn, Mrs Kellie Campbell and Dr Laraine Law for their support and time representing the parents and staff throughout 2020/2021/2022. We appreciate your contributions and commitment to the students and Kurwongbah State School community. The school council is now seeking one parent representative and two staff representatives for nomination for 2023/2024.
The role of the School Council is to support the Principal in setting and reviewing the School’s Strategic planning and progress. Recent work focused on Strategic Partnerships including establishing a playgroup, connections with University of Southern Qld to promote learning partnerships and a focus on partnerships supporting sustainable practices within our school community. The current School Council have developed a 2022/23 Action Plan focusing on early years partnerships and sustainability practices within the school community. If you would like to know more about the School Council or may be interested in applying for the 2023/2024 position, please contact the Principal or school office (07) 3481 4333 or download the nomination form and return to the office.
Bell Times
Parents are reminded of the bell times. If you are planning to collect your child during the break times, please ensure you contact the office to advise, so we can have your child waiting at the office. We can’t otherwise guarantee to locate your child until they transition back to their classroom.
Absences
State schools are required to notify parents on the same day any student is absent from school without explanation. Rolls are marked at 8:50am and 2:10pm each day. An SMS message will be sent to any parent of a student with an unexplained absence by 11am. Students who are not in their class at 8:50am will be marked absent and MUST collect a late slip from the office. Parents collecting their children early must sign them from the office before collecting from the classroom.
Absence notification process
Please remember to call the school on 3481 4333 and press option 1 early in the morning if your child is going to be away or late for school so your child’s absence can be recorded correctly.
Please be sure you indicate the following when reporting the absence:
- Name of child (especially if there is more than one child in your family)
- Absence reason – Please indicate if your child is sick or at an appointment etc. Indicating that your child is not coming to school, does not give a true reason for the absence
- Late Arrival – If your child will be late due to an appointment, please indicate an approximate time of arrival
- Dates of absences, if longer than 1 day
Same day notification
Our school will contact parents as soon as practicable on the day if a student is not at school and we don’t know why. If you are advised by the school that your child is away without a reason, please contact us as soon as possible by reply text to let us know where your child is. We will follow-up with parents if no response is received.
Student Safety Issues
The safety of students and staff is very important. Members of the school community are asked to observe the following:
- Students are required to have their Kurwongbah school hats at school EVERY day and students must wear hats during both play breaks regardless of where they are playing.
- Students who bring scooters to school must secure them in the bike area. Scooters are NOT to be stored in class areas.
- Parents and carers are also asked to use the school crossings (Eacham Street and Eucumbene Drive) when bringing their children to and from school. This teaches our children the correct road safety rules. Thank you for your support with these safety precautions.
- Parents and carers are permitted to photograph their own child at school events and activities but are requested to refrain from taking photos of other children or posting school material online (including Facebook).
NAPLAN 2023
In March 2022, Education Ministers announced that NAPLAN testing would be moved to Term 1 from 2023. The 2023 NAPLAN testing dates are Wednesday 15th March 2023 to Monday 27th March 2023.
NAPLAN is used by governments, education authorities and schools to determine whether young Australians are meeting important goals in literacy and numeracy.
Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are expected to sit the NAPLAN tests, which are held in Term 1 each year.
NAPLAN gives a snapshot of how children are performing in reading, writing, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and numeracy. It complements other effective classroom assessment and reporting practices.
School Photos
School photos for 2023 have been scheduled for Tuesday 28th March and Wednesday 29th March (Week 10). Information on class schedules and payment information will be sent out closer to photo date.
Parade Presentations 2023
Whole school parades are held each Friday morning from 8.55am in our school hall. Parents are most welcome to attend. During the year each class or year level will present a presentation on parade. Below is the 2023 parade presentation schedule:
Mobile Phones
If your child has a mobile phone, it is signed in at the office where it is stored safely in a locked cupboard during the school day. At the end of the day, your child needs to come to the office to collect it. Mobile phones are not to be kept in school bags.
Storm Warnings
If the weather forecast is indicating storms or we have heavy rain at 3pm, your child will be kept in class until your arrival at the classroom. Please do not panic when collecting your child as this can distress other students.
Contact Details
It is important that the school have the correct contact details. This is especially important in emergency situations or if your child presents as unwell during the school day. If you have changed your mobile phone number, address or email address, complete the attached form and forward to the office. Please be also aware if you have a change in emergency contacts.
School Parking Patrol Program
Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC) Local Laws Unit undertakes a School Parking Patrol Program where officers complete scheduled school patrols, both in the morning and afternoon, to ensure that vehicles are parked in a safe and lawful manner. The primary aim of the program is to ensure that students and family members/caregivers are able to safely move around the school area as part of dropping off or picking up students from the school.
The Moreton Bay Regional Council Local Law No.5 (Parking) 2011 and Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act 1995 control parking or stopping of vehicles on footpaths, bicycle paths, marked yellow lines, shared paths, dividing strips and nature strips, along with vehicles parking across residents driveways and within ‘No Stopping’, ‘No Parking’, and ‘Bus Zones’ and Pick-up / Drop -off zones. Council is legally required to enforce these areas and the School Parking Patrol Program forms part of this process. Drivers are reminded that footpaths and nature strips are in place to promote pedestrian movement in a safe manner along roadsides and those drivers and residents must not stop on a bicycle path, shared path, dividing strip or nature strip. Please also note those vehicles that are parked with two wheels up and two wheels down is not considered as a lawful parking practice.
Local Laws officers conduct enforcement through the issuance of Penalty Infringement Notices as part of each School Parking Patrol. Please be aware that Council officers may take photographic evidence of vehicles stopping or parking illegally with Penalty Infringement Notices to be issued via mail at a later date to the offending vehicle’s owner.
Visit the link below for further guidance on parking restrictions.
http://www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/parking
For any further information, members of the School community are welcome to contact Moreton Bay Regional Council on 3205 0555.
School Zone Safety
With school back, it's a timely reminder to drivers to slow down in school zones and pay attention at children’s crossings.
Coming back after holidays it can be easy to forget what to look out for. School zone signs are displayed as you approach the school and shows both the speed limit and the times you need to reduce your speed around the school. Children's crossing are identified by children crossing flags, which are displayed near crossings before and after school hours.
When the crossing is supervised, you as a motorist must:
- Wait until all pedestrians, bicycle or personal mobility device riders have crossed the road and the crossing supervisor has returned to the footpath
- Abide by the direction given by the School Crossing Supervisor.
- If the crossing is unsupervised, you as a motorist must:
- Give way to pedestrians, bicycle or personal mobility device riders on or entering a children’s, pedestrian or marked foot crossings
- Give way to pedestrians, bicycle or personal mobility device riders on or entering a road you’re turning into
- Give way to pedestrians, bicycle or personal mobility device riders on a slip lane
- Give way to pedestrians in a share zone
- Travel at a speed allowing you to stop safely at a crossing if needed
As a driver, it's important to make sure you give way to all pedestrians, bicycle or personal mobility device riders such as skateboards, e-scooters. You must also give way to pedestrians using a motorised mobility device such as a motorised wheelchair or a mobility scooter.
Some of our most vulnerable road users are children getting to and from school, so it’s important to slow down and abide by the crossing rules, as it won’t make much difference to the trip time, but it could very well save lives.
Visit the Street Smarts website to find more information about what to do at pedestrian and children crossings.
Eco-Marines News
This year the Eco-Marines will continue to focus on reducing waste by means of recycling and composting. They will also be responsible for educating students, staff and the wider school community on ways we can reduce the amount of waste produced and ending up in landfill.
Students in Year 5, who are passionate about the environment and are willing to commit to the role throughout the year should be encouraged to nominate for an Eco-Marine’s leadership position. In Week 5, students who are interested in nominating will need to produce a speech to present to their Year 5 peers stating why they would be a suitable candidate.
With the support of the school community, we look forward to improving how waste is managed at Kurwongbah State School.

Chappy News
Hello Kurwongbah Families,
Welcome back to those who have continued their primary school journey with our school and a special welcome to all our new families who have joined us this year. We are so glad to have your family in our school and look forward to supporting your little one/s with their primary school adventure.
My name is Carly Evans and I am the school Chaplain (Chappy) here at Kurwongbah.
School chaplains are contracted by schools to provide social, emotional, and spiritual support to students, parents, and staff. My role in the school is directed by the school leadership and is reflective of the specific needs of students, and runs as a proactive support role within our student support team. The bulk of my role revolves around supporting students with their day-to-day lives, as well as providing them with skills and strategies designed to empower them to be the best person that they can be. This can be achieved through a variety or measures, including one-to-one conversations, small group activities, parade challenges, PBL input, and simply being available for a student who needs to have a listening ear. For the most part, my role is that of a friend to the students in our school community and a trustworthy adult who will champion them on their journey. It is a fantastic job!
Accessing the Chaplaincy service is easy and open to the whole school community - there are no barriers for support and all are welcome. I work two days per week (Thursday and Friday) and am available via phone (3481 4333) or email ( carly.evans@suchaplaincy.org.au or cevan330@eq.edu.au ). Parents and carers can refer their student for support either directly or through the student’s teacher/deputy principal. If a student is referred to the service for support, parent/carer permission is needed formal sessions, ideally with communication between myself and the family to provide the best support for the student.
If you have any questions or require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
It is my personal and professional goal to ensure that every young person I meet knows that they are intrinsically valuable beyond measure and that they matter in this world. It is my joy and privilege to be able to support your young person in our school.

Inclusion News
John Edwards, who is not the ‘Medium’ but rather the educational researcher, calls it ‘The Learning Pit’, and there is a great amount of research into change management that talks about the discomfort of change, and let’s face it, learning something new is about changing from where we are at, to a new position or understanding.
The Learning Pit Model, I like. It talks about the process of learning. Learning is obtaining new knowledge and skills that we didn’t have before. If we are presenting knowledge and skills that we already know, then we already know it and we aren’t learning!
Worry, concern, discomfort and anxiety come from the unknown; therefore, learning something unknown will bring up these emotions – What if I can’t do it????
The school curriculum is designed as a spiral. New information is presented in chunks – not that we are taught what we need to know at the end of a year, at the start, we are just given the next step. Our differentiation policy looks at individualising and presenting to a specific student, what their next step in learning is.
However, if there is no discomfort, then we aren’t really in the learning zone. So my daughter is now 18 months old, and she develops so quickly! It has been really hard though. Even from crawling, to walking and all the steps in between. My gut reaction has been to remove all the obstacles, to pick her up and to intervene at every moment of frustration for her – trust me, she lets me know with a grunt, a grown, a squeal or an absolute cling on to my leg.
My challenge, our challenge, as teachers and as parents and carers, is to allow the discomfort. I have been counselled, very heavily, to let my daughter work it out, have a go, and ask for help, and wow, I now see the signs of a determined and more confident, maybe too confident, young child. My daughter knows that I am there, with her in the discomfort; she knows she’s safe and she knows there is help available. I am constantly saying ‘work it out’, and you see her stop, think and navigate life’s obstacles, or she gets to a point and baby signs ‘help’ and says “Pease” – she’s not quite got the ‘l’ sound yet.
As a school, as a community, there is help available. We have a multi-tiered system of support in place for children at school, and a focus on wanting our children to experience success, and have success in the long term. We aim to provide the level of support that allows them to experience a level of discomfort, to persist, be determined, show grit, not give up and have a go, but for them to know that we are on their team and in the learning with them. We need to be aware of the discomfort and struggles, and we rely on their in-school and out-of-school team to be active communicators with each other, and supporters of our students.
Every emotion is a natural part of life. We as humans experience the full range from excitement and pure joy, through to angst, frustration, anger and anxiety. These are all normal experiences.
The best part of it all is that it is a learning pit, and with persistence, grit and teamwork, we get out the other side of the pit, stronger, with more experience to draw from that enables us to be confident at the next learning pit!

Guidance Officer (GO) Greetings
Greetings Kurwongbah families!
I am excited to be back at Kurwongbah SS as your Guidance Officer for 2023. My name is Olivia Devereux (but your children might know me as Mrs D. - which is much easier to remember!)
My role as Guidance Officer (GO) is varied and includes providing advice and counselling on educational, behavioural, personal, social, family, and mental health and wellbeing issues. Guidance Officers may work directly with students (with parent permission), in addition to working with teachers, families and other specialists. If you feel your child may need Guidance Officer support, the first step would be to discuss your concerns with your child’s teacher.
Can I also take this opportunity to share some information about Parentline – Parentline can provide one-off or ongoing FREE virtual counselling (daily between 8am – 10pm) to support parents and caregivers. Your child would have received a Student Resource Scheme (SRS) form which needs to be returned promptly. The Student Resource Scheme provides parents with a convenient and cost-effective way to obtain/access educational resources that their child needs for school. The resources include the hiring of the performance uniform, purchase of music/ license fees and the hiring of an instrument (some students). If you choose ‘No’ it is your responsibility to source and supply the all the resources mentioned. By ticking 'Yes' you are agreeing to participate in the SRS which is convenient and cost effective. You will also need to choose a payment option within the ‘Yes’ box (some forms have been sent back home because the payment option was not specified). If you have any enquiries about this, please contact the teacher concerned. All notes are to be returned to the office or music room please. Students hiring an instrument from the school will not be able to take their instrument home until both the SRS and Loan Agreement form are returned. In the coming weeks an invoice will be emailed with the total amount. Please keep an eye out for the email and do not pay the levy until you have been invoiced by the school.
Performance Uniforms
Students in all instrumental ensembles and choirs will start to be fitted over the coming weeks. Once all students have been fitted and payment has been finalised, your child will be able to take the uniform home (this will be towards the end of the term).
Rehearsal Times
Below is the rehearsal timetable for Term 1.

First Aid News
Medication
The First Aid room is able to administer medication as described by the Education Queensland Regulations:
- Must have consent to administer medication form.
- ALL MEDICATION MUST be in the original container from the pharmacy with both the child’s and Doctor’s name, clear WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS on the container, and must be lodged with the School First Aid Room for security purposes. WE CANNOT ACCEPT INDIVIDUAL CAPSULES OR TABLETS.
- Must be prescribed by a GP/Specialist. Non-prescribed medications (eg aspirin, panadol, cough medicine etc) should NOT be brought to school and WILL NOT be administered by school staff unless it is prescribed by medical practitioners.
- Any students with a medical condition also require official documentation from the child’s Doctor/Specialist indicating the condition and any emergency plans.
Students are not permitted to have any medication on their person or in their bags while they are at school.
For general medication, please be aware of the guidelines from the Department of Education. ALL medication no matter what it is, is required to be prescribed by a qualified health practitioner (eg: doctor, dentist), in its original container/box and have a pharmacy label attached. Failing to adhere to these guidelines means that we are unable to administer the medication to your student and you will be called to either collect the student or come and administer the medication yourself.
If your child has had an Action Plan (of any sort), these need to be updated every 12 months. It is preferable this occurs at the beginning of each year.
If you have any questions regarding medications at school, please call the First Aid Room on 3481 4335.
