National Consistent Collection of Data

Collecting data on school students with disability helps teachers, principals and education authorities support the participation of students with disability in schooling on the same basis as students without disability.

All Australian Governments have agreed to work together on the annual collection of data on school students with disability.

Please be reassured that the Department will not provide to another organisation any data that can identify an individual student. The only data being collected at the school level to be reported nationally is the:

  • number of students in the school who are provided with an adjustment to address a disability;
  • level of adjustments we provide for those students; and
  • broad category of disability.

Consultation with parents is important not only for the data collection but also to ensure you are aware of the adjustments being provided to support your child. We will therefore continue to consult with you.

While only data that cannot identify your child will be submitted outside of the Department, if you do not wish for your child’s details to be included, please let your child’s teacher know.

Information and fact sheets are available to help you make a decision from the:

  • Department’s website: http://education.qld.gov.au/curriculum/disability-data-collection.html
  • Australian Government Department of Education website:

http://education.gov.au/nationally-consistent-collection-data-school-students-disability

Alternatively, if you have any queries about the collection or use of this data I encourage you to contact the school directly.

Year 5 Camp

The Year 5 Camp is scheduled for Wednesday 7th October to Friday 9th October. It is essential that we know any medical conditions related to your child that may impact their stay at camp.

Please return the Year 5 Camp Medical Form to your child’s teacher asap.

The Office of Fair Trading runs the Buy Smart competition and there are great cash prizes to be won! Kurwongbah has participate in this for many years. Year 4 Robotics

The Year 4 classes and their teachers will be attending robotics lessons this term with the STEM and Enrichment Support Teacher. Students will be learning about computational thinking, block coding, programming and using their mathematical skills to make their robot perform set challenges. This will also enhance their skills for their current math’s unit about using scaled instruments to measure and problem solving.

Sphero Robots

Kurwongbah now has its very own Sphero robot. This fun and interactive sphere shaped robot will be available in the Makerspace for Junior and Senior students to use to enhance their learning in coding and programming as well as problem solving and computational thinking. Students can learn to drive them in the areas to navigate a course using the iPad or computer. Teachers can also borrow the Sphero for mathematical lessons on angles and measurement, direction and shape formation. These robots are able to travel in water and can go across many terrains. Come into the Makerspace soon to have a go and use this new robot!

Ipswich Poetry Competition

The Ipswich Poetry Feast is an exciting initiative of Ipswich City Council. The Poetry Feast has flourished since it was introduced in 2002 with the aim of establishing a respected and prestigious national poetry competition to encourage young and aspiring poets and raise community awareness of the creativity and skills in poetry writing. If you would like to enter, you can go online to the link below or pick up an entry form from the Library. This competition is open to all primary students free of charge with a total prize pool of over $6500. Entries must be submitted by Friday 31st July 2020.

Physical Education & Sports News

Gala Day

Notes for Year 5/6 students were issued Friday 17th July. Invoices for payments were also emailed to parents Friday 17th July. Our Gala Day was scheduled for Week 9 but has now moved to Week 6 (21 August). Payments for Gala Day must close this Friday. Final team nominations will be made to Pine Rivers Sport Monday 27 July based on the payments received. No late payments will be accepted. Team selection will be finalised by the end of Week 2 and training will commence. Whilst this isn’t a competitive sport opportunity, we still want our students to be familiar with the game rules and be able to play effectively with their team mates. All forms are to be returned to the school office (not classroom).

Term 3 Sport

Changes have been made to the Term overview for sport based on the Gala Day change (see attached). There are many options for student training leading up to our Pentathlon and Junior Athletics days. Our Sports Captains have been doing a tremendous job since mid-Term 2 encouraging younger students, attending training and demonstrating responsibility and reliability. Thank you to each of the captains.

Brisbane Roar – Before School Football

Last term we scheduled some before school football sessions. These were cancelled due to the ‘learning from home’ period and COVID restrictions. These are now rescheduled for later this term. Basic details are as follows:

Year 1/ 2

  • Tuesday mornings (4th, 11th, 18th August)
  • 8.00 – 8.40am
  • Meet Mr. Waldron on the oval cricket pitch just before 8.00am

Year 3/ 4

  • Thursday mornings (6th, 13th, 20th August)
  • 8.00 – 8.40am
  • Meet Mr. Wood on the oval cricket pitch just before 8.00am

If students have football boots or other non-school joggers then these are recommended for these sessions as feet will become quite wet during the sessions. Students can change into dry shoes and fresh socks when they arrive at class. A plastic bag for wet shoes is also a good idea as they wet shoes could become quite feral by the end of the day. No nominations are required and no payment needed for these before school sessions.

Junior Swimming Program

Notes and invoices will be issued to Prep – Year 2 students this week. Our Junior swimming program is scheduled for Weeks 7-10 (see schedule specific classes). We strongly encourage all students to attend. Additional information about the program will be provided a little closer to the start. All lessons are indoors in the learn to swim pool which is a minimum of 28 degrees temperature. If you require additional information regarding the program please contact Mr. Wood.

School Banking News

The School Banking is back from 06 August!

We are happy to announce that School Banking will recommence from Thursday 06 August and will operate from the Office. While the handling of cash money is not within the ‘cashless’ processes the school is transitioning to, it is the only mode which will allow school banking to proceed and we are keen to ensure families continue to have access to this service.

To ensure the safety of the students and also the volunteers, the following changes have been implemented:

  • Banking will be processed from a meeting room in the Office to ensure the area is part of the school’s regular cleaning processes.
  • Hand sanitiser will be utilised by all volunteers before and after handling money.
  • Any parent who is unwell, or has younger children who are unwell, will not attend the school.
  • Social distancing rules will be adhered to and minimal interaction with children required.

Students will still be able to take their bank book to their classroom and have it delivered to the Office within the class banking satchel, alternatively they can drop their bank book directly into the banking tub which will be located inside the Office. The tub will be signed and volunteers available to assist children if required.

Update on Reward Points for Term 2

With the pause of the school banking program, CommBank acknowledge that students were unable to make deposits in the usual way and therefore missed out on receiving reward points for their deposits throughout Term 2. As a result, CommBank have decided that any student who made a deposit in Term 1 of 2020 will receive a random reward to acknowledge their contribution. A parent/guardian letter will be attached to the reward to explain why the child has received the reward.

Please note the KSS banking team have no control over which rewards our school are provided by CommBank so requests cannot be accommodated.

New Rewards available in Term 3

For any child who achieves 10 or more reward points this term, the following rewards are now available for ordering:

Thank you for your patience over the last few months. We are excited to get started and can’t wait to see you all back and banking!

Leah Reid
School Banking Coordinator

YMCA OSHC

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to YMCA Kurwongbah! Term Three has kicked off with flying colours. On opening morning the looks on the children’s faces were absolutely priceless. They had a great morning exploring all the new resources in their space. The imaginative play area and construction zone were absolute hits!

The Seniors now proudly have the “Seniors Hub” in the hall. This is a space to make and call their own. Along with the other age groups they have been busy collaborating and collating with their peers their expectations of each other for the various spaces.

The children have enjoyed their new ‘Art Studio’ engaging in art and craft activities such as playdough, beading and creating artworks to decorate their space. Outdoors the preps and year ones have been excited to play on their newly refurbished playground and the seniors have been keen on a game of indoor soccer.

Please feel free to contact us if you need or may need to use OSHC in the future. If you would like to come in and view the service, please contact us to make an appointment due to the COVID restrictions currently in place. Everyone is welcome!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Kim and the P&C for enabling the smooth transition and the continued support of the school administration team. We look forward to building a long-lasting relationship with all.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Fundraising News

With COVID -19 continuing to interfere in our daily lives, the Fundraising Team have planned two great fundraisers for Term 3 that we think you are going to love!

Thermomix or Bunnings: Which one wins in your house?

Do you pick the new TM6 Thermomix and accessories valued at $2,300 or a $2,300 Bunnings Voucher? Who gets to choose, Mum or Dad? Will it be a menu reno or a home DIY project? In August, we will be running an online raffle where the winner gets to choose just that.

Tickets will go on sale on August 1st and be drawn on Monday August 31st. Tickets are

  • $10 each,
  • 3 for $25
  • 5 for $35
  • 7 for $45.

The link for purchases will be posted on the Kurwongbah P&C Facebook page on August 1st, and the raffle is open to QLD Residents only. Cash orders will be accepted, and we will advise how this will occur in our launch post.

Billy G’s Gourmet Cookie Dough Drive

Who doesn’t like being able to add some cookie dough to their ice cream, or be able to whip up a batch of cookies for when the friends come over. Well with Billy G’s Gourmet Cookie Dough, you can have a stash of flavours in the freezer ready for such an occasion.

Families will be invited to set up an online profile to collect orders, and children can earn great prizes by encouraging family and friends to purchase tubs of cookie dough through their link. The 1kg tubs of dough are available in a range of 10 flavours for $16 each.

If you prefer to collect orders in person and pay with cash, a limited number of paper order forms will be available. Please let the fundraising team know your child will need an order form by emailing fundraising@ksspca.qld.edua.au anytime before 25th September, and stating your childs name and class. Paper order forms will be delivered to your childs class for them to bring home. Children collecting paper orders are also eligible for great prizes to reward their efforts.

This fundraiser will start on the 7th September and run until the 25th of September. Cookie Dough collection will be via Drive Thru on Saturday October 10th at the school.

Father’s Day Stall

Due to COVID-19, we have had difficulty getting items for a Father’s Day Stall, and in conjunction with restrictions on volunteers onsite, we have decided to cancel the Fathers Day stall this term. We hope you will take part in our great raffle instead and be in the running to win a $2,300 prize for Dad (or Mum).
