We are now taking names of Prep students for 2022. Children who were born between 1 July 2016 and 30 June 2017 are eligible to commence Prep in 2022. Parents are invited to contact the school office (34814333) if they are intending to enrol their child at Kurwongbah for Prep in 2022. Enrolment interview for Prep 2022 have now commenced. Please contact the school for further information. There will be a school tour for Prep 2022 this Friday 3rd September commencing at 9.00am. Please see flyer link below for further details.
Children Leaving Kurwongbah
We are starting the process of forming classes for 2022. Parents whose child or children (other than Year 6 students) will be leaving Kurwongbah at the end of the year are asked to inform the school office please.
2022 Parent Class Requests
We are beginning the process of forming classes for 2021. This is a thoughtful process which takes into consideration many factors. Our underlining consideration is always, what is the best learning environment for each student?
If there are specific learning needs for your child which you would like us to take into consideration, please write these needs, along with your child’s name and year level they will be in next year, and hand this into the office by Friday 15 October. This is not a teacher selection process so please don’t request a particular teacher.
Parents are advised that, whilst consideration will be given to requests, final class formation decisions will be made by the school administration in consultation with teaching staff.
Show Holiday
The show holiday for Moreton Bay Region has now been rescheduled to Friday 29th October.
Junior Swimming
Junior Swimming Block One commences on Monday 6th October at Genesis Pool. Payments for Block 1 swimming have now closed.
Classes attending Block 2 Swimming need to make final payment of $72.00 by Friday 10th September.
Should you wish to undertake a payment plan, these need to be arranged through the office prior to the due date of payment. Payment plans require a 50% payment prior to due date.

School Parades
With the relaxation in Covid Restrictions, school parades have now resumed each Friday morning from 8.55am in our school hall. Parents are welcome to attend. Please check in with the Check In QLD App at the entrance to the hall. School Parade is Thursday this week due to Student Free Day on Friday. Prep and Year 4-6 Outstanding Student Awards will be announced on parade this week.
Swooping Birds
Spring is rapidly approaching and along with the warmer weather it also means the beginnings of the breeding season for many of our feathered friends. Some native bird species including magpies, plovers, butcherbirds and crows, are well known to swoop as a defensive behaviour to protect their young. Swooping is typically most common during the spring breeding season, but if weather conditions are favourable some species may start breeding from late winter and continue into summer.
Children may encounter swooping birds on their way to and from school, or while inside school grounds. While being swooped on can be unpleasant, there are simple steps that can be taken to reduce safety risks to individuals and the community.
Not all birds of these species swoop. In fact, it is estimated that only 9% of magpies show this aggressive behaviour. Birds usually swoop for six to eight weeks, until their eggs have hatched and their young are grown.
Native birds are protected under the Nature Conservation Act 1992, it is therefore illegal to harm them or interfere with their nests and eggs.
If there is a swooping bird in your area:
- Take an alternative route - the best way to avoid being swooped is to avoid the bird’s territory
- Wear a hat and sunglasses or carry an umbrella to protect your face and eyes
- Dismount from your bicycle and walk through the area
- Don’t wave your arms, yell or throw objects at the bird - this will likely make the bird more aggressive
- Remain calm and walk quickly through the area, but don’t’ run - injuries often occur when people panic and run from a swooping bird
If you are concerned about a swooping bird on council land you can report it to council on (07) 3205 0555. Council may install temporary signage around the territory of a swooping bird to alert residents of its presence.

Cultural Committee News
As you may be aware our cultural committee began working towards rejuvenating our indigenous garden as a part of NAIDOC week celebrations. During lunchtimes the students and teachers have been clearing out the old materials and preparing the soil. Throughout the journey the students have spoken to Dr. Law about the many interesting things you may find in the soil and gardens in general, such as, decomposers, insects and other random finds.
Our goal is to complete this space as soon as possible. The plants are in and we are working on establishing them. Once established, the next stage of our project will commence, the yarning circle.
If you as a parent, carer or other family member have an interest in this area of culture we would love your support. This is a community project and we want as many members involved as possible. The sense of pride on the students faces who have been in the garden already is priceless and we want to extend that to as many people as possible. Please contact Daniel Mills by email at damil1@eq.edu.au if you want to be involved.

Music News
Last Friday the restrictions around rehearsing and performing for instrumental music and choirs were revised and as a result, within the school environment, members of large bands, choirs or ensembles are able to rehearse in the same location. Physical distancing within a school by students is not required. This is great news and means all our ensembles are able to resume full rehearsals.
Choir News
There are no rehearsals this Friday due to the Pupil Free Day. All Choir rehearsals will resume in week 9 for Junior Singers, Middle Singers, Kurwongbah Blokes, Performance Group and Senior Singers.
Senior Singers
Year 5 and 6 students will rehearse together every Friday morning before school commencing at 7.45am. Rehearsals will start back on Friday 10 September.
Book Club News
There was a delay in the Book Club Catalogue delivery, and it has only just been partially delivered. I have distributed the ones I have received, and I will do the same when the catalogues arrive hopefully soon. If you would like to make an order in the meantime, refer to the links below. How Book Club Helps Your Child’s School
Every time you place a Scholastic order, your School is being rewarded! For example, for every Book Club order you place, Scholastic receives 20% of your total order spend to your school as Scholastic Rewards. This allows the school to purchase books and resources for your child’s classroom and the library, helping students reach their highest potential.
How To Order
The Book Club LOOP platform for parents allows you to pay by credit card. Your child’s order is submitted directly to school and the books will be delivered to your child’s class. You can place your child’s order at the link below or using the LOOP app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
http://scholastic.com.au/LOOP
Cash orders can be handed into the library. Simply fill out the order form on the back of the catalogue, place the form and the exact cash amount (no change given) into an envelope or clip seal bag and drop off to the LIBRARY ONLY!
