Welcome to New Prep Students
Last week we welcomed 83 brand new Prep students beginning their school journey at Kurwongbah. The students have settled into their school lives very well and are enjoying making new friends and participating in the many activities that their teachers have planned for them.
Absences
State schools are required to notify parents on the same day any student is absent from school without explanation. Rolls are marked at 8:50am and 2:10pm each day. An SMS message will be sent to any parent of a student with an unexplained absence by 11am. Students who are not in their class at 8:50am will be marked absent and MUST collect a late slip from the office. Parents collecting their children early must sign them from the office before collecting from the classroom.
Absence notification process
When reporting absences, please use our SMS service (preferably) on 0429 919 560. Your other means of letting us know is via our absence line (3481 4366), by QParents or by the main phone line. Please be sure you indicate the following when reporting the absence:
- Name of child (especially if there is more than one child in your family)
- Absence reason – Please indicate if your child is sick or at an appointment etc. Indicating that your child is not coming to school, does not give a true reason for the absence
- Late Arrival – If your child will be late due to an appointment, please indicate an approximate time of arrival
- Dates of absences, if longer than 1 day
When using our absence line (3481 4366), please speak very clearly.
Same day notification
Our school will contact parents as soon as practicable on the day if a student is not at school and we don’t know why. If you are advised by the school that your child is away without a reason, please contact us as soon as possible by reply text to let us know where your child is. We will follow-up with parents if no response is received.
Bell Times
Parents are reminded of the bell times. If you are planning to collect your child during the break times, please ensure you contact the office to advise, so we can have your child waiting at the office. We can’t otherwise guarantee to locate your child until they transition back to their classroom.
Student Safety Issues
The safety of students and staff is very important. Members of the school community are asked to observe the following:
- Students are required to have their Kurwongbah school hats at school EVERY day and students must wear hats during both play breaks regardless of where they are playing.
- Students who bring scooters to school must secure them in the bike area. Scooters are NOT to be stored in class areas.
- Parents and carers are also asked to use the school crossings (Eacham Street and Eucumbene Drive) when bringing their children to and from school. This teaches our children the correct road safety rules. Thank you for your support with these safety precautions.
- Parents and carers are permitted to photograph their own child at school events and activities but are requested to refrain from taking photos of other children or posting school material online (including Facebook).
Parent Information Evenings
Due to the current Covid restrictions in schools, the planned parent evenings are unable to proceed at this time. Class teachers have emailed information to families about your child’s class and what they will be learning about this term. If you have any further questions, please email your child’s teacher and they will be happy to respond to your questions.
Year 6 Camp
We have made the decision to change the date of the Year 6 Camp. Instead of 7-9 March it will move to 30 May-1 June. This hopefully gives us greater confidence that our children will have this experience in 2022 as there is currently a degree of uncertainty. No changes to the program. We are just moving into Term 2.
Important forms and notes sent home recently:
- Year 6 Camp Permission Form 2022
- Coolum Surf School Disclaimer Form

Voluntary Contribution
Voluntary Contribution is a vital part of the Kurwongbah P&C’s commitment and helps to fund reading books, maths & science consumables, art consumables, digital resources, sporting equipment and positive behaviour learning program resources.
You can make a financial contribution to the school by completing the attached form and forwarding with payment to the school office. The contribution equates to $1 per week for the 40 weeks of the school year. If parents would like to pay a larger or smaller contribution towards their child’s education they are welcome to do so.
Insurance Cover For Students Undertaking Physical Activities
Physical activities and physical education, particularly contact sports, carry inherent risks of injury. Parents are advised that the Department of Education Training and the Arts does not have Personal Accident insurance cover for students. Education Queensland has public liability cover for all approved school activities and provides compensation for students injured at school only when the Department is negligent. If this is not the case, then all costs associated with the injury are the responsibility of the parents or caregiver. It is a personal decision for parents as to the type and level of private insurance they arrange to cover students for any accidental injury they may incur.
Mobile Phones
If your child has a mobile phone, it is signed in at the office where it is stored safely in a locked cupboard during the school day. At the end of the day, your child needs to come to the office to collect it. Mobile phones are not to be kept in school bags.
Contact Details
It is important that the school have the correct contact details. This is especially important in emergency situations or if your child presents as unwell during the school day. If you have changed your mobile phone number, address or email address, complete the attached form and forward to the office. Please be also aware if you have a change in emergency contacts.
Storm Warnings
If the weather forecast is indicating storms or we have heavy rain at 3pm, your child will be kept in class until your arrival at the classroom. Please do not panic when collecting your child as this can distress other students.
Did You Know?
Did you know that you can enrol your child in YMCA OSHC for free. This is a good stand-by in case you ever need to use them in an emergency situation. You will only be charged for any hours your child is actually attending for either the morning or after school.
School Council News
The school council is seeking two parent representatives for nomination for 2022/2023.
The role of the School Council is to support the Principal in setting and reviewing the School’s Strategic planning and progress. Recent work focused on Strategic Partnerships including establishing a playgroup, connections with University of Southern Qld to promote learning partnerships and a focus on partnerships supporting sustainable practices within our school community. The current School Council have developed a 2022/23 Action Plan focusing on early years partnerships and sustainability practices within the school community. School Parking Patrol Program
Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC) Local Laws Unit undertakes a School Parking Patrol Program where officers complete scheduled school patrols, both in the morning and afternoon, to ensure that vehicles are parked in a safe and lawful manner. The primary aim of the program is to ensure that students and family members/caregivers are able to safely move around the school area as part of dropping off or picking up students from the school.
The Moreton Bay Regional Council Local Law No.5 (Parking) 2011 and Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act 1995 control parking or stopping of vehicles on footpaths, bicycle paths, marked yellow lines, shared paths, dividing strips and nature strips, along with vehicles parking across residents driveways and within ‘No Stopping’, ‘No Parking’, and ‘Bus Zones’ and Pick-up / Drop -off zones. Council is legally required to enforce these areas and the School Parking Patrol Program forms part of this process. Drivers are reminded that footpaths and nature strips are in place to promote pedestrian movement in a safe manner along roadsides and that drivers and residents must not stop on a bicycle path, shared path, dividing strip or nature strip. Please also note that vehicles that are parked with two wheels up and two wheels down is not considered as a lawful parking practice.
Local Laws officers conduct enforcement through the issuance of Penalty Infringement Notices as part of each School Parking Patrol. Please be aware that Council officers may take photographic evidence of vehicles stopping or parking illegally with Penalty Infringement Notices to be issued via mail at a later date to the offending vehicle’s owner.
Visit www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/parking for further guidance on parking restrictions.
For any further information, members of the School community are welcome to contact Moreton Bay Regional Council on 3205 0555.
Kurwongbah Fete – Sunday 19th June 2022
Our biennial fete is scheduled for Sunday 19 June 2022. This is a fabulous community event thanks to all our wonderful volunteers.
Next Fete Meeting
The next fete meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 2nd March 2022, 6:30pm in Staffroom.
Fete Donations
Students will be provided with a fete donation passport. Every week we will ask families to donate items for a specific collection week e.g. softdrinks, bag of chocolates, second hand clothes, jars. Students will receive a stamp for each collection week. Students with a completed passport will receive a small gift for your contribution, and will go into the draw for a prize. There are also bonus collections. Further details to come.
Fete Convenor
We are looking for stall convenors. Our fete cannot run without volunteers. Each convenor is responsible for the planning, execution and reporting on their chosen stall. Convenors will be supplied with as much information as possible on how the stall was previously run. Working closely with the Fete Committee, convenors will also be given the choice/chance to bring new ideas to fruition.

Kurwongbah Kids Playgroup
Kurwongbah State School Playgroup will be starting this year on Friday the 18th of February. Please see the attached flyer for more information about these sessions. If parents or children are unwell please stay home this will help to keep our playgroup families safe and well.
Eco-Marines News
This year the Eco-Marines will focus on the ‘KSS Community Waste Reduction Project’. The aim of the project is to reduce the amount of waste entering the school grounds and better manage waste by means of recycling and composting. The Eco-Marines will be responsible for educating students, staff and the wider school community on ways we can reduce the amount of waste produced and ending up in landfill.
Students in Year 5, who are passionate about the environment and are willing to commit to the role throughout the year should be encouraged to nominate for an Eco-Marine’s leadership position. In Week 5, students who are interested in nominating will need to produce a speech to present to their Year 5 peers stating why they would be a suitable candidate.
With the support of the school community, we look forward to improving how waste is managed at Kurwongbah State School.
Chappy News
Hello Kurwongbah families,
Welcome back to those who have continued their primary school journey with our school and a special welcome to all our new families who have joined us this year. We are so glad to have your family in our school and look forward to supporting your little one/s with their primary school adventure.
My name is Carly Evans and I am the school Chaplain (Chappy) here at Kurwongbah. School Chaplain? What is that?
Good question - I get asked it all the time!
School chaplains are contracted by schools to provide social, emotional, and spiritual support to students, parents, and staff. My role in the school is directed by the school leadership and is reflective of the specific needs of students, and runs as a proactive support role within our student support team. The bulk of my role revolves around supporting students with their day-to-day lives, as well as providing them with skills and strategies designed to empower them to be the best person that they can be. This can be achieved through a variety or measures, including one-to-one conversations, small group activities, parade challenges, PBL input, and simply being available for a student who needs to have a listening ear. For the most part, my role is that of a friend to the students in our school community and a trustworthy adult who will champion them on their journey. It is a fantastic job!
Accessing the Chaplaincy service is easy and open to the whole school community - there are no barriers for support and all are welcome. I work two days per week (Wednesday and Friday) and am available via phone (3481 4333) or email ( carly.evans@suchaplaincy.org.au or ceven330@eq.edu.au ). Parents and carers can refer their student for support either directly or through the student’s teacher/deputy principal. If a student is referred to the service for support, parent/carer permission is needed formal sessions, ideally with communication between myself and the family to provide the best support for the student.
If you have any questions or require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Now, a little bit about me!
I have been in and around chaplaincy for many years with this being my eighth year in the primary school sector. Prior to chaplaincy, I have had various roles across the families and community sector, as well as several years in the corporate sector.
I am also a mother of five boys (four of my own plus a bonus lad!) ranging in age from 27 - 10 years old. My youngest is in Year 6 here at Kurwongbah and this year marks the end of 22 years of me being a “primary school mum” - phew! Along with being a mum and a Chappy, I am also coming into my third year of studying Arts/Law at uni so I don’t mind keeping busy!
Finally, I look forward to sharing with you resources that I believe are valuable to us as parents and carers, over the course of the year. This week I have attached a Mental Wellbeing Info Sheet for families that provide links to some great resources that may be especially helpful as we start the new school year with the challenges that we have been facing.
It is my personal and professional goal to ensure that every young person I meet knows that they are intrinsically valuable beyond measure and that they matter in this world. It is my joy and privilege to be able to support your young person in our school.
Chappy Carly :)
STEM & Enrichment Education News
Kurwongbah’s Makerspace
What is a Makerspace? It is a learning environment rich with possibilities. Makerspaces serve as gathering points where communities of new and experienced makers connect to work on real and personally meaningful projects, informed by helpful mentors and expertise, using new technologies and traditional tools.
The library is home to a Makerspace where students can come in and create using robotics, learn coding, design, build and test prototypes using engineering principles or perform science experiments. Students will have the opportunity to engage in various programs throughout the year as a class in the Makerspace exploring computational thinking and design and technology applications.

Your child would have received the Student Resource Scheme (SRS) forms, which need to be returned promptly. The Student Resource Scheme provides parents with a convenient and cost-effective way to obtain/access educational resources that their child needs for school. The resources include the hiring of the performance uniform, purchase of music/ license fees and the hiring of an instrument (some students). If you choose ‘No’ it is your responsibility to source and supply the all the resources mentioned. By ticking 'Yes' you are agreeing to participate in the SRS which is convenient and cost effective. You will also need to choose a payment option within the ‘Yes’ box (some forms have been sent back home because the payment option was not specified). If you have any enquiries about this please contact the teacher concerned. All notes are to be returned to the office or music room please. Students hiring an instrument from the school will not be able to take their instrument home until both the SRS forms (SRS Fee Payment Arrangement Form & SRS Participation Agreement Form) and EQ11 Loan Agreement form (if applicable) are returned.
In the coming weeks an invoice will be emailed with the total amount. Please keep an eye out for the email and do not pay the levy until you have been invoiced by the school.
Performance Uniforms
Students in all instrumental ensembles and choirs will start to be fitted over the coming weeks. Once all students have been fitted and payment has been finalised, your child will be able to take the uniform home (this will be towards the end of the term).

Choir News
Thank you to everyone who has completed the online registration for Senior, Middle and Junior Singers. Notes were also handed out for interested students last week. If your child is wanting to join you can still either complete the registration online or obtain a note from the music room. If you have registered online, please ensure that you download, complete and return the Student Resource Scheme notes to the office or music room. These are also available from the office or music room if required. The link is
https://kurwongbss.schoolzineplus.com/form/9
The Performance Group is a small, auditioned extension choir for students in Years 5 and 6 who are in the Senior Singers. This will be mainly for Year 5 students, as the Year 6 students are continuing from last year (there will be limited positions available for Year 6 students). I will speak to the Senior Singers about this at the first rehearsal and start auditions the following week. This group rehearse two times per week. One rehearsal is a sectional rehearsal (soprano or alto) and the other is a combined rehearsal.
The Kurwongbah Blokes is for boys in Years 4 - 6. Continuing students from 2021 have already been given notes and new members will receive their note this week with all the details.
I look forward to a great year of making beautiful music and singing with the students from Kurwongbah.

How Book Club Helps Your Child’s School
Every time you place a Scholastic order, your School is being rewarded! For example, for every Book Club order you place, Scholastic receives 20% of your total order spend to your school as Scholastic Rewards. This allows the school to purchase books and resources for your child’s classroom and the library, helping students reach their highest potential.
How To Order
The Book Club LOOP platform for parents allows you to pay by credit card. Your child’s order is submitted directly to school and the books will be delivered to your child’s class. You can place your child’s order at http://scholastic.com.au/LOOP or using the LOOP app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
Cash orders can be handed into the library. Simply fill out the order form on the back of the catalogue, place the form and the exact cash amount into an envelope or clip seal bag and drop off to the LIBRARY ONLY!

YMCA OSHC News
Hello everyone,
My name is Jay Gomez and I am the new Service Coordinator for YMCA Kurwongbah, our community’s outstanding Outside School Hours Care Service.
Our OSHC service works alongside Kurwongbah State School to deliver an engaging outside school hours care program that successfully reflects the values of the school and the YMCA. We are open to provide care for our students before and after school.
Our before school sessions start at 6am until school begins. Our after school session runs from 3pm to 6pm.
We also offer a vacation care program that runs over the school breaks.
If you would like to book your child into our exciting programs, feel free to email me at akb@ymcabrisbane.org . I am more than happy to answer any questions you might have about our service.
I look forward to getting to know you all.
Regards,
Jay Gomez
