2023 Prep Enrolments
We are now taking names of Prep students for 2023. Children who were born between 1 July 2017 and 30 June 2018 are eligible to commence Prep in 2023. Parents are invited to contact the school office (Ph: 3481 4333) if they are intending to enrol their child at Kurwongbah for Prep in 2023. Enrolment forms will be sent out this term and interviews conducted early in Term 3. Please contact the school for further information.
Assessment Moderation and Reporting
Teachers will be completing their assessment for Semester One by the end of Week 9. They will moderate the assessment pieces with their year level colleagues. Semester 1 reports will be completed and emailed to parents on Wednesday 13th July.
Academic Awards for students from Year 3 to 6 will be finalised and they will be presented on Parade on Friday 22nd July. A copy of Academic Awards Criteria for Semester One is below.
School Attendance
We are well and truly half way through Term 2 and the weeks are flying by. Remember that every day counts and consistent daily attendance improves student learning outcomes significantly. Please support us by ensuring your child is at school every day unless they are unwell. Your attention to this important matter is appreciated.
Payments
Education Queensland has introduced an additional method of paying for school invoices (camps, excursions, incursions etc). This method is called BPoint and is Education Queensland’s preferred method of payment. Please click on the link below for further information in regards to using BPoint to make payments.
Covid Restrictions Update
As you may be aware, Queensland Health has updated the requirements for anyone who is deemed a close contact of a confirmed case of COVID-19. Please note, when determining whether someone is a close contact, schools and early childhood services are not considered a household, or household-like accommodation or care facility.
New Requirement for Close Contacts
From 6pm on Thursday 28 April 2022, close contacts that do not have COVID-19 symptoms are no longer required to quarantine.
Students who are close contacts must notify their school that they are a close contact. For 7 days after becoming a close contact, students over the age of 12 must wear a face mask while outside of their home, including at school, and when outdoors if unable to physically distance. Queensland Health also recommends that children under the age of 12 wear a face mask when it is safe to do so.
It is recommended that students undertake a rapid antigen test (RAT) on the first day they leave home, and every second day (e.g. days 2, 4, and 6) until they are no longer a close contact. Close contacts that develop COVID-19 symptoms must not attend school and should isolate until their symptoms resolve.
Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs)
Schools are now providing RATs to staff or students who are close contacts. Please contact the First Aid should you require a RAT.
If You or Your Child Tests Positive to COVID-19
Queensland Health requirements for people who test positive to COVID-19 remain unchanged. You must follow the Queensland Health guidelines outlined in the first steps to take if you have COVID-19.
Face Masks
As a gentle reminder, masks continue to be required in certain settings for anyone aged 12 years or older, such as when travelling on public transport. They are also recommended whenever you can't physically distance. Anyone who chooses to wear a mask at school will be supported to do so.
We will continue to keep you informed of any changes to our response to COVID-19.

Eco-Marines News
Last week the Eco-marines promoted ‘Waste Free Wednesdays’ on parade with the goal to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill at Kurwongbah State School.
‘Waste Free Wednesday’ is an initiative where students are encouraged to bring food items to school on Wednesdays without being wrapped or packaged in items that can be disposed of in our rubbish bins. Many families have already adopted these sustainable practices and through this initiative are hoping more families will consider how they can limit their child’s waste at school.
The Eco-Marines will continue to promote this initiative on parade and educate students on why it is important to reduce waste. Here are some examples the Eco-Marines mentioned on how you can enter into the spirit of ‘Waste Free Wednesday’:
- Instead of your child bringing sandwiches wrapped in cling wrap, they can pack them straight into a plastic container.
- If your child brings food in a zip-lock plastic bag, encourage your child to take it home again so it can be washed and reused.
- Chip and biscuit packaging are some of the most common types of rubbish thrown away. Before school depose of the packaging at home and bring the items in a plastic container.
- Crunch items don’t require packaging, put the item into a plastic container.
A big thank you to all students, staff and families who have supported the Eco-Marines with this very positive project.

Inclusion News
I am generally passionate about what I do. I enjoy my job and love every day where I get to see a child grow. I am lucky because if I didn’t get some happiness out of what I did each day, I would look to change job.
I have sat in many enrolment interviews and spoken with my mantra about children being at school, “here, happy and learning”. I am a realist and recognise that not every part of the day brings happiness. In life, I like maths, I work on percentages – I want 80% content or above. Not every day is full of excitement and over-joyousness.
I spend a lot of time talking with students, and get a little concerned when I hear them say “you’re not allowed to be angry” or that being angry is a bad thing, that you get in trouble for. In fact, it may make me a little angry to hear that. I would challenge anybody to think of their life and not recognise a time where they were angry. It is an emotion, a naturally occurring, part-of-life, non-avoidable emotion. I think what we need to reframe things with it the International (no matter where in the world you are) Anger Rule: It’s ok to be angry. We all get angry. It’s not ok to hurt yourself, hurt other people, break things.
It is the emotional regulation that is important. Have you ever thought about the fact that our body’s reaction to anger and excitement is the same? Our heart rate increases, our muscles tense up, we get a funny feeling in our stomach, our arm hairs stand on end. Given that all behaviour is learnt, what are the opportunities we have to teach our children, as young as possible, the difference?
From a theoretical standpoint, there are four emotions: HAPPY, SAD, WORRY, ANGRY.
All our other feelings are degrees or levels of those four emotions. Content, melancholy through to overjoyed and excitement. Flat, down through to depressed, inconsolable. Concerned, on my mind, through to obsessed, unable to cope. Niggled, frustrated through to furious and rage.
Emotions are emotions, they are natural and unavoidable. It is what we do with them that is important. This is the role of self-awareness and self-regulation. The more we share, discuss, recognise our body signs and talk about how we stay in control with our emotions, the better we situate our children to move from dysregulation, to co-regulation to self-regulation (all at different rates, and times, levels – because we are all different).
If I can encourage our community though, let’s not avoid emotion, as then, when it comes around in life, we are not well equipped to understand it, and work with it. We just do it gently and together!
